There’s nothing at all usual about Senator Tammy Duckworth from Illinois.
“About damn time,” she said (viaBBC).
But her story begins before that history-making occasion.

In 2016, she became one of the first Asian-American women to serve in Congress.
And as a double amputee, she also became the first disabled woman to be elected to Congress.
Duckworth claimed her senate seat on Tuesday, November 8, 2016.

“Every day since …
When theIraq Warstarted in 2003, Duckworth was a captain with the Illinois National Guard.
Her former unit was called to duty, and she asked to go with them.
When they arrived, the soldiers had already departed.
This fell directly into Duckworth’s lap.
She ultimately failed to do so.
Her pilot in command, Chief Warrant Officer Dan Milberg, succeeded.
Even after 13 months in the hospital, Duckworth was ready to serve again.
“This didn’t change who I am,” she told a congressional hearing.
